The Kifah bourse: how Baghdad sets the dollar price every morning

Two street markets in Baghdad, Kifah and Harthiya, set the number the whole country quotes. How the morning session works, why one board rate travels to Basra and Erbil within the hour, and where DinarView reads Baghdad today.

The official rate of 1,310 and the Central Bank’s dollar window: how it works, and why the street pays more

When Iraqis ask “what did the dollar1,588+0.52% open at?”, they mean one place. Al-Kifah is a street in central Baghdad, and the cluster of exchange companies and money brokers around it, together with a second cluster in Harthiya on the west bank, is the wholesale market where the dinar’s daily price is discovered. Every board in Basra, Erbil and Mosul is a retail echo of what happened there between nine and eleven in the morning. This article explains how the session works, why it moves the whole country, what the last four years look like from its floor, and how DinarView reads Baghdad now.

What the Kifah bourse is

It is not an exchange with a building and a bell. It is a market made of licensed exchange companies, larger money brokers and their runners, trading dollar notes in blocks of ten thousand and up, mostly against dinars delivered the same day. The traders know each other; prices move by phone and by shouted quotes as much as by boards. Harthiya, across the river, trades the same way and the two arbitrage against each other within minutes.

The price that comes out of the session is quoted per hundred dollars, in “thousands”: a trader saying “one fifty-four, five” means 154,500 dinars for a hundred-dollar note. That is the number that reaches the rest of Iraq as “the Kifah rate” or “the Baghdad opening”.

How a morning session sets the rate

  1. Before nine. The brokers know how many dollars are coming into the market that day: what the banks are releasing from the Central Bank’s window, what travellers and traders will sell, and how much dinar demand is waiting. They open with a bid a little below Thursday’s close if dollars are plentiful, a little above if they are scarce.
  2. Nine to eleven. The bulk of the day’s wholesale volume trades. A block that clears at 154,400 pulls the next quotes toward it; if a large buyer keeps taking dollars the price steps up in increments of 250 dinars per hundred.
  3. By noon. The retail offices across the city have repriced their boards off the morning’s level, adding their own spread. Boards in Basra, Najaf, Erbil and Sulaymaniyah follow within the hour, adjusted for local supply.
  4. Afternoon. Volume thins; prices drift unless news lands. The evening quote becomes the reference for the next morning.

That is why a single number can move a country of forty-five million people at once: the wholesale market is small, concentrated and fast, and everyone else prices off it.

Why the whole country follows Baghdad

Three reasons. Most of the physical dollars that enter the market do so in Baghdad, because the banks that draw from the Central Bank’s window are headquartered there. The largest exchange companies, with branches in twenty or more cities, set one national price from their Baghdad head office; Al-Taif, whose board DinarView reads, is one of them. And the arbitrage is cheap: a dinar difference of a few hundred per hundred dollars between Baghdad and Erbil is enough to send a car north with a bag of notes.

The result shows in the data. On 3 September 2026 the Erbil boards were 154,375 to 154,788 per hundred and the Baghdad board 154,200: a difference of a quarter of one percent, inside the spread of a single Erbil office.

Episode When Move What the session was reacting to
The compliance shock Nov 2022 to Feb 2023 1,480 → 1,728 Stricter checks on dollar transfers abroad cut the supply reaching the window; demand did not fall
The revaluation Feb to Apr 2023 1,728 → 1,451 The official rate cut to 1,300; the market repriced the whole ladder down
The autumn squeeze Aug to Nov 2023 1,528 → 1,602 Renewed pressure on transfers and seasonal import demand
The long slide Jan to Jul 2025 1,508 → 1,401 Improved official supply through banks; the gap narrowed toward ten percent
The January jump Jan 2026 1,440 → 1,553 A supply interruption at the window; the market has held 1,500 to 1,578 since

Every one of those moves began in the morning session and was on the boards in Erbil by lunchtime. The lesson for anyone watching the rate is that Baghdad leads: a change in the Kifah opening on a Saturday is usually the whole week’s direction.

How DinarView reads Baghdad

DinarView does not stand on the street; it reads what the market publishes. For Baghdad that is the public rate board of Al-Taif Exchange, a licensed company with more than twenty branches nationally, headquartered in Karrada. Its board prints a single rate for the dollar, so the Baghdad figure on this site is labelled indicative until a second Baghdad board is added. Erbil, where three offices publish two-sided boards, gives the national median its depth.

That is a deliberate choice over the alternatives. Some sites publish “the Kifah rate” from a phone call or a social-media post with no time and no name attached. DinarView publishes only what a named office printed, with the minute it was read, and lets you open the board yourself. When Baghdad offices with public boards join, the city figure becomes a median like Erbil’s.

Questions people ask

Can an ordinary person trade at Kifah?

You can change money at any of the licensed offices there, at retail rates a little wider than the wholesale price. The wholesale blocks are traded between companies and brokers.

Why is the Baghdad board a single number?

Large chains publish one national rate and apply their spread at the counter. Erbil’s independent offices publish both sides. Both are honest; they are different ways of printing the same trade.

Is the Kifah rate the “black market” rate?

No. The companies are licensed by the Central Bank and trade openly on a public street. It is the open-market or parallel rate, and DinarView calls it the market rate.

Does the session run on Friday?

No. Friday is the market holiday. Thursday’s close stands until Saturday morning, which is why DinarView’s boards show Thursday’s time through Friday.

The live Baghdad figure, with the board behind it, is on the Baghdad page; the national median and every board are on the rate board.
